Omiti Biochar Projects

Mainstreaming Gender Equality in Our Biochar Carbon Removal Projects

Commercially and financially strong carbon-negative projects revolving around the involution of rural communities and conservancies in Namibia.

Our projects are built on a strong commercial basis and implemented to bring about change on the ground in Namibia’s rural communities in the form of new opportunities for livelihoods based on the restoration of rangelands and biodiversity through sustainable encroacher bush harvesting, biochar production, and carbon credit generation.

The projects are geared to address the inadequate level of incentives or alternatives that rural communities have to reduce the stress on land, their inadequate income base, and an alternative source of income.

We operate integrated natural resources management projects that involve the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources (being encroacher bush biomass) in order to contribute to economic growth and poverty alleviation of these rural communities.

Omiti Biochar Assemble Projects Based on the Following Distinctive Features:

  1. The production of biochar and carbon credit certificate generation will lead to an increase in the community’s ability to diversify its activities to build resilience against climate change effects.
  2. This increased diversification activity needs to be: financially equitable (economic resilience for all members of the community), supportive of the entire community (social resilience through all members having the ability to improve their soils and food security), and minimizing harmful impacts on the natural environment (ecological resilience through reclaiming degraded rangeland and biodiversity).
  3. Livelihoods will be improved by establishing a sustainable business enterprise based on the sale of carbon credits to generate a sustainable income stream.

Omiti Biochar Projects Also Relate to Relevant Supported Governmental and Institutional Programmes, Which Include:

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forestry & Tourism to reverse environmental degradation and maximize sustainable livelihoods based on nature.
  • The Namibian Government’s National Strategy on the Sustainable Management of Bush Resources.
  • Restoring degraded, bush-encroached land which is a key priority in national policies such as the National Rangeland Management Policy and Strategy (NRMP&S) and in international frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and Namibia’s commitment to these frameworks.

Despite Namibia’s commitment to gender equality, climate change and land degradation threatens to increase levels of inequality between men and women, thus further hampering the country’s resource mobilization and human resources development. Women in the rural areas are most affected by the impacts of bush encroachment and climate change due to their reliance on natural resources for daily household chores.

"We ensure that our projects focus on gender responsiveness (and not only gender awareness) and pay attention to the unique needs of females, valuing their perspectives, respecting their experiences, and understanding developmental differences between women and men."
